The greatest and latest in Frankfurt

Just a quick note between flights...I am in Frankfurt airport for the first time, and I have two words for you: German sausages. Juicy, savoury, and crisp, with rich brown mustard on the side. That's the greatest.

Two more words: self-disinfecting toilets. Flush, and an arm slides out over the seat, releasing a cleanser as the seat rotates clockwise 360 degrees. And that's the latest.

Note to self: see if this technology is available for home. And if I can import sausages...

Just a suggestion...... don't get the two technologies mixed up. Sausage wiped toilet seats!?!? Doesn't bear contemplation.

No, this is not about the Muppets. Although, that's not a bad idea... I have enjoyed some very good food on this trip to Sweden, and thought I would share tonight's meal with you. But first, last week I attended a conference on the fascinating island of Gotland, in the Baltic Sea (more about Gotland later) and the closing dinner was held at the Visby golf club. The chef introduced the meal, speaking about his focus on fresh, seasonal local ingredients. And it was superb. A necessary and disturbing stop in Germany

The other night we were watching Episode 9 of Band of Brothers , the excellent HBO series based on the equally excellent book by Stephen Ambrose . Entitled "Why We Fight", the troopers of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment come across a concentration camp as they move through southern Germany, in Bavaria. It reminded me of our visit to Dachau this past summer. We spent several days in Austria in July, flying into Munich and driving south to Bad Gastein, in the Austrian Alps. We made a detour when we left Munich, spending a few hours at Dachau. We had planned this before we left Doha, thinking this was an important place to visit. We were right. I didn't know much about Dachau beyond the name and the fact that it was a concentration camp.
